It’s been a while since we last gave you a sneak peek behind the scenes at Epix HQ. So who better to speak to than our newest team member, Junior Web Developer, Ben?

What has inspired you this week?
I’ve found myself being inspired this week by my friends and family – I’m lucky to be surrounded by friends and family who are highly creative and driven to succeed in their respective field. I love seeing my friend’s projects come to life and positive responses to their work keeps me motivated to push myself so I can constantly improve and not give up on projects that I may struggle with. I’m starting to see noticeable improvements in my own work, which in itself inspires me to go further.
What have you been up to?
The past few weeks I’ve been stuck into building a website for a hotel bar. This week I’ve been adding a few finishing touches to the website ready to be delivered to the client. I’ve been having to triple check everything to make sure I’ve not missed anything out but overall I’m happy with the end result! Outside of Epix, it’s general family life as usual, and in the little spare time I’ve had to myself, I’ve been catching up with TV shows (Riverdale/The Society/Black Summer) and spending some time playing video games.
Office Playlist – What music have you been listening to this week?
With a date finally announced for their new album, I’ve been listening to a lot of Tool; specifically their albums 10,000 Days and Lateralus. When I haven’t been listening to music I’ve caught up on a paranormal podcast called ‘Two Girls One Ghost’ (It’s not what you think haha) and listened to a few episodes of Syntax, which is a web development podcast by Wes Bos and Scott Tolinski.
What have you been excited about?
I’ve been most excited for the delivery of the hotel bar website to the client – This has been the first big website I’ve built both personally and professionally, so it’s great to see it all come together and I’m incredibly proud of both what I’ve achieved and what we’ve been able to produce as a team. I love the phrase “Every day is a school day” and this is very relevant with me being a Junior; I’m learning new skills and technologies every day and I can always see an improvement in my work, which is a great motivator!
The best thing you’ve seen online all week?
I’ve been watching a lot of Mountain Biking videos recently, getting hyped for the summer events that are happening worldwide. From this I discovered a Tedx Talk by a pro-rider named Martyn Ashton, who unfortunately suffered a spinal chord injury in 2013 which has left him paralysed from the waist down. The talk discusses the injury he suffered and how he’s handled the situation moving forward. I found this really inspiring simply due to his positivity and how he’s able to use that to overcome the challenges he’s faced.
What skills have you learnt this week?
This week has been a debugging week, which I’ve found frustrating due to how time consuming it was in the start and not being able to figure out the issue. However I definitely feel as the week has progressed, so has my speed in finding and fixing bugs in my code and I know this will only improve over time! On a broader level I now understand how PHP ‘If’ statements and ‘While’ loops work and why/how to use them in my code correctly, so that’s a minor victory!
